That Girl is an American sitcom that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. It stars Marlo Thomas as the title character Ann Marie, an aspiring (but only sporadically employed) actress, who moves from her hometown of Brewster, New York to try to make it big in New York City, while also balancing life with her boyfriend Donald Hollinger (played by Ted Bessell) a writer for Newsview Magazine.
Is this a post-apocalyptic symbol of fascism, or the cute hairdo of a sitcom starlet of the 1960's?
Within the context of MST3K, Mike, Joel, and the Bots frequently made jokes about either the series, or the star herself, primarily while watching a movie made during the 1960's and noticing a female character with a similar hairstyle to Ms. Thomas during the first four seasons of the series, often by blurting out her catchprase "Oh, Donald." Though the hairdo eventually became a trademark, it was actually quite common for girls and young women to wear flip hairdos during much of the 1960's.
On some occasions, other related topics were used as jokes. In Catalina Caper, the SOL crew poked fun at a dance segment by shouting "Do the Donald Hollinger." In Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Joel refers to her starring role in the much maligned 1977 made-for-TV movie "It Happened One Christmas," as "the lame Marlo Thomas version of It's a Wonderful Life." In The Wild Wild World of Batwoman, besides repeating her catchphrase, when Batwoman asks a villain about what he did with one of her henchwomen, who she referred to as "that girl," Tom snarked that he introduced her to Phil Donahue, Marlo's real-life husband. In Girl in Gold Boots, one of the crew referred to the go-go dancers as "Marlo Thomas and the Marlo-ettes."
