The series centers on an extraterrestrial named Zim from the planet Irk. After bungling an assignment, the incompetent Zim is given the mission to conquer Earth and enslave the human race by his superiors (who are trying to get rid of him). He is provided with a malfunctioning robot servant called GIR. Because of his small stature, Zim must pose as a human schoolchild.
Zim is opposed by Dib, a young paranormal investigator who is the only person to recognize that Zim is an alien. Dib is typically thwarted by bad luck, his own short-sightedness, or his hostile sister Gaz.
