MST3k ConventioCon ExpoFest 2 opening title

ConventioCon ExpoFest-A-Rama 2: Electric Boogaloo was an official Mystery Science Theater 3000-centric fan convention held from August 30th to September 2nd, 1996 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Much of the convention was filmed for posterity.

The keynote session featured the entire cast and writing staff, including the departing Trace Beaulieu. It featured a few cryptic comments from Sci-Fi Channel executive Barry Schulman and a tribute video of classic Trace moments. New writer Bill Corbett was seated at the table with the rest of cast and writers. At the time, BBI refused to confirm rumors that Bill had been chosen to take over the role of Crow.

The celebrity panel included Kim Cattrall (featured in Experiment #403 City Limits), Russell Johnson (The Professor from Gilligan's Island and co-star of This Island Earth) and Rex Reason (co-star of This Island Earth).

Notes[]

  • The subtitle "Electric Boogaloo" is taken from the 1984 film Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, the sequel to a popular breakdancing movie from earlier that year. The phrase "Electric Boogaloo" originally referred to a funk-oriented dance style, but has since come to be associated with the phenomenon of unnecessary film sequels.
  • At one session, scenes that had been cut from Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie were shown. It may be the only time the Dave Alvin version of the MST3K theme song (with lyrics) was ever heard in its entirety in a public setting.
  • Also shown was a rough cut of a short, Assignment: Venezuela, that was to be included on the planned CD-ROM.
  • At another session, Mike Nelson defeated a number of fans in the video game Doom, while Mary Jo Pehl and Bridget Jones took another group shopping at the Mall of America.
  • A Mystery Science Theater Alive! live performance was originally scheduled, but cancelled a few weeks prior to the convention, due to the announcement that Trace Beaulieu was leaving the show.
