The Digital Archive Project (DAP) was originally created as a means of sharing and preserving, in a digital format, episodes of the cult classic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000. It has grown and shrunk over the years, with many cult and obscure shows added and removed from the list of archived material. DAP is the primary means of digital MST3K "tape trading" on the internet and effectively all MST3K video on the net stems from the DAP releases.
The current qualifications for a show to be offered via DAP include: no commercial release, no immediate plans for it to be released, and not currently in production. MST3K is a slight exception, due to the large number of episodes and long odds of a full release of every last episode due to the divergent rights issues involved, the site subscribes to standard MST3K tape trading theory of no distribution of commercially released episodes and removal from distribution of episodes with announced and confirmed releases. MST3K episodes that were commerically released but have been pulled from sale, such as for example The Amazing Colossal Man, are considered valid for re-distribution, but only encodes based on the original broadcast version, not the commerical release.
The DAP originally disributed using a specially crippled release of edonkey2000 and a central integrity server which didn't store any files, only helping ensure trading only of non-commerically released episodes, fair sharing based on contribution/offered files and file quality. Eventually, the service shifted to a more conventional BitTorrent server.
Originally settling for the CD-ROM size of 700MB for full episodes, the DAP also spread out towards producing DVD-quality (and sized) encodes.
